What are the Causes of Adult Acne?

Are you like many others who have experienced adult acne in your lifetime? Perhaps you are someone who has struggled with pesky zits or even cystic acne as an adult. Contrary to what everyone said, your acne didn’t improve with time. Do you struggle with covering acne and potentially make it worse with skincare products that can further clog pores? It’s a big juggling act and you just wish you could understand how to fix it.

Why Do I Still Have Acne as an Adult?

To fix the issue of acne, we must first understand the root causes. When pores become clogged, bacteria can get trapped in the pores and that’s when we see the eruption of a pimple or zit. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that 50 million Americans struggle with acne and acne occurring in adults is increasing, affecting up to 15 percent of women. So, what can we do about it?

Is This My Acne?

When it comes to solving skin issues and healing your skin, it’s important to determine the cause instead of just throwing money at the issue with all the various drugstore or high-end treatments you can think of. The following is a list of potential causes for your acne:

Potential Causes of Adult Acne

Bacterial: Bacteria is abundant on human bodies. Some bacteria are beneficial and some bacteria just causes problems. When bacteria find its way into your pores and is trapped, it can form a lesion that we call a pimple or zit. Bacteria becomes trapped in a pore when we do things like scratching our face, forcing out blackheads or improperly cleansing our skin.

Improper cleansing and use of products: It is immensely important to cleanse the skin on your face. The most difficult aspect of cleansing is to know which products to use. There are endless varieties of cleansing products on the market, but it is best to use a product that is tailored to your skin type and can assist in resolving your acne propensity.

Touching your face: Let’s face it, we are all guilty of touching our face. What we don’t always consider is the bacteria and oils on our hands that may transfer to our face. Take a day or two to really focus on how much you are touching your face. This often happens when we are absent-minded – like when we are thinking, talking or falling asleep.

Something that can help is cleansing our hands often and not picking at our pores.

Dirty bedding: Sometimes the root problem of adult acne is as easy to solve and can be as simple as washing our bedding. When we sleep, we drool, sweat and leave skin particles all over our pillowcases. It isn’t always pretty and it can leave behind bacteria and oils that irritate our skin, causing acne. Take the time to change out your bedding at least once per week to ensure this isn’t contributing to your acne issues.

Hormonal Causes: At times, intrinsic factors such as our hormones can contribute to persistent acne, and this can make us feel out of our control. Hormonal acne isn’t caused by picking at our faces or using too much facial oil.

If you think you might be experiencing hormonal adult acne, it’s good to speak with your doctor or other PCP to discover the root cause.
